Indica Strains — complete overview
Indica strains originate from the Hindu Kush region (Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern India). Compact plants with broad leaves that produce dense, resinous flowers. Their effects are typically physical, relaxing, sedating and analgesic — ideal for evening use, sleep issues, muscle tension and chronic pain.

Genetics, origin and botany
Botanically, 'Indica' describes populations that have adapted over centuries in the Hindu Kush belt between Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Northern India to short summers, intense UV radiation, and cold nights. This environment shaped their characteristic habitus: a stocky growth of 80 to 150 centimetres, short internodes, broad dark green leaves, and dense, highly resinous flowers with a flowering time of around 45 to 60 days. This compact structure is the reason why Indica genetics form the backbone of almost all modern indoor hybrids, delivering yield per square metre rather than height. Crucially for classification: in today's breeding reality, pure landraces barely exist anymore. What is sold commercially as Indica is usually an Indica-dominant hybrid with a 70 to 90 percent Indica share. The category therefore describes a growth and aroma family rather than a strict botanical boundary – scientific literature increasingly prefers the term 'Cannabis sativa L., indica-type'.
Effect profile, terpenes and consumption context
The classic Indica profile is described as physical, heavy, and sedating: muscle relaxation, dampened sensory processing, increased appetite, and, at higher doses, the well-known 'couch-lock'. This is less down to the Indica lineage itself than to the terpene profile. Myrcene dominates in many of these strains and is considered the primary sedative component, complemented by linalool (floral, calming) and beta-caryophyllene (peppery, and the only known terpene to bind directly to the CB2 receptor). In CBD flowers from Swiss indoor cultivation, this terpene profile is preserved while the psychoactive component is absent – the effect is then usually described as 'relaxed but clear'. The typical context of use is the evening: after sports, before bed, or simply to wind down. Those who need to remain functional during the day are better off combining Indica flowers in lower doses or choosing a balanced hybrid.
Legal status and availability in Switzerland
In Switzerland, legality is determined by total THC content rather than strain category. Flowers with less than 1 percent total THC do not fall under the Narcotics Act (BetmG) and may be legally sold to adults aged 18 and over; above this limit, the strain is classified as a narcotic. Consequently, Indica-dominant CBD strains are regularly available, whereas THC-rich Indicas can only be obtained via a medical prescription under Art. 8 para. 5 BetmG or through the time-limited cantonal pilot trials under Art. 8a BetmG (including Basel, Zurich, Bern, Lausanne, and Geneva). Crucial for consumers: when purchasing, the Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an accredited laboratory is what matters, not the strain name. Reputable providers declare total THC including THCA conversion, not just Delta-9-THC – otherwise, a product may formally appear to be under the threshold while factually exceeding it.
Selection, dosing and storage in practice
When selecting a strain, it is best to prioritize terpenes over labels: if you are looking for relaxation, filter for myrcene- and linalool-dominant strains rather than the word 'Indica'. For beginners, CBD-dominant Indica hybrids with 8 to 14 percent CBD are ideal; experienced users often choose strains in the 18 to 24 percent CBD range with a rich terpene profile. Practical pitfalls to avoid: excessive temperatures when vaporizing (above 200 °C, volatile terpenes burn off and the aroma turns grassy), improper storage (light and heat degrade cannabinoids – airtight glass, a dark place, 15 to 20 °C, and 58 to 62 percent relative humidity are optimal), and buying too much at once for occasional use. A 3-gram comparative purchase of two to three different strains yields far better insights than buying 10 grams of a single strain.

FAQ
What is the difference between Indica and Sativa?
Indica is physical, sedating, relaxing and used in the evening. Sativa is cerebral, energising and used during the day. Hybrids combine both profiles.
Which Indica strains are legal in Switzerland?
All Indica strains under 1% THC are legal as CBD flowers (18+). High-THC Indicas are only legally accessible through approved pilot trials or a medical prescription.
Which Indica strain is the strongest?
The most potent Indica-dominant strains in our database reach 25% THC and above — including Purple Punch, Northern Lights and modern Kush hybrids.
Does Indica automatically make you tired?
No. The sedative effect depends on the specific terpene and cannabinoid profile as well as the dosage, not on the category. An Indica hybrid low in myrcene can have a much clearer effect than a heavy Sativa.
Are pure Indica landraces still available to buy?
Hardly. Almost everything on the market consists of Indica-dominant hybrids; genuine landraces like Afghan Kush or Mazar-i-Sharif mostly exist only as breeding lines in gene banks and preservation projects.
