Hybrid Strains — complete overview
Hybrids are targeted crosses of Indica and Sativa genetics. They now account for over 90% of the modern cannabis market and fall into three sub-groups: Indica-dominant, Sativa-dominant and balanced 50/50 hybrids.

Genetics, origin and botany
Today, hybrids are the rule rather than the exception. Practically every strain developed since the 1990s combines Indica and Sativa genetics to selectively control flowering time, yield, aroma, and effect profile. In breeding terms, a distinction is made between F1 crosses (the first generation of two stable parent lines, which is highly uniform), subsequent generations where traits segregate, and backcrosses, where a cross is bred back to one of the parents to lock in a specific trait. For consumers, the term phenotype is key: plants grown from the same seeds can develop noticeably different aromas and cannabinoid contents. This is why the same strain name rarely tastes identical across two different producers—batch numbers and lab reports tell you much more than the name itself.
Effect profile, terpenes and consumption context
Hybrids are usually described by their dominance: indica-dominant (body-focused), sativa-dominant (cerebral), or balanced. In practice, however, the cannabinoid ratio and terpene profile shape the experience much more than the genetic percentage on the label. A 50/50 hybrid with high levels of beta-caryophyllene and myrcene will have a more calming effect than an indica-dominant hybrid with a limonene spike. This precise controllability is exactly what makes hybrids the most pragmatic category: they allow for profiles that never existed in landrace strains—such as a 20:1 CBD:THC ratio paired with berry terpenes, or a balanced profile for users seeking neither sedation nor stimulation. For beginners, balanced CBD hybrids are the most reliable choice because they cushion extremes in both directions.
Legal status and availability in Switzerland
The Swiss CBD market consists almost entirely of hybrids: breeders select for high CBD and low THC content, which inherently requires crossbreeding. Legally, the 1% total THC limit applies here as well; any products exceeding this threshold are classified as narcotics and are only accessible with a prescription or within pilot trials. Because hybrid names are not protected, many products on the market share the same name but are genetically completely different. The only reliable way to compare them is through the Certificate of Analysis: total CBD, total THC (including acidic forms), terpene spectrum, as well as testing for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbiological contamination. Swiss indoor flower is typically tested batch-by-batch, whereas imported products often lack these reports.
Selection, dosing and storage in practice
A good selection process for hybrids is to first determine the desired time of day, then select the terpene profile, and only look at the strain name last. If you already know a strain that works for you, the fastest way to find alternatives is through the dominant terpene, not the genetic lineage. When switching between strains, taking a break of a few days is useful to avoid confusing tolerance effects with differences between strains. For storage, always keep strains separate and do not mix them—terpenes diffuse between buds and will neutralize individual aromas. And when comparing prices per gram, always take the quantity into account: tiered pricing in Switzerland can shift the actual price per gram by 30 to 50 percent, depending on the retailer.

FAQ
How do I recognise a good hybrid?
Check the genetics (known parents), the terpene profile (dominant terpenes match your desired effect) and the origin (verifiable breeder).
What does Indica-dominant mean?
Indica-dominant means more than 50% of the genetics comes from an Indica lineage. Effects then trend toward physical relaxation.
Which hybrid is the most popular?
Gelato, Wedding Cake, OG Kush, Girl Scout Cookies and Blue Dream are among the most searched hybrid genetics worldwide.
Is a 50/50 hybrid always balanced in its effects?
No. The genetic ratio says very little about the actual experience. The decisive factors are the CBD:THC ratio and the terpene profile of the specific batch.
Why does the same strain taste different from two different providers?
Different phenotypes, growing conditions, harvest times, and drying methods. Strain names are not protected or standardized—only the lab report allows for a true comparison.
