Sativa Strains — complete overview
Sativa strains originate from equatorial regions (Colombia, Mexico, Thailand, central Africa). Tall plants with narrow leaves and long flowering periods. Their effects are cerebral, energising, creativity-boosting and social — ideal for daytime, creative work, sports and social occasions.

How to choose
Sativa-dominant does not automatically mean 'high'. THC-sensitive users should start with low-THC or CBD-rich Sativas. Classics like Amnesia or Sour Diesel are potent — not for late-evening use.

Genetics, origin and botany
Sativa types originate from regions near the equator – Colombia, Thailand, Mexico, Central Africa – where day length varies very little throughout the year. Consequently, they grow tall (reaching over three meters outdoors), developing long internodes, narrow light green leaves, and airy, elongated buds. At 10 to 16 weeks, their flowering period is significantly longer than that of Indica types, making them less attractive for fast indoor cycles and explaining why genuine Sativas are rare and more expensive on the market. Breeding lines like Haze are compromises: they preserve the cerebral effect and aroma profile but shorten the flowering time by crossbreeding Indica genetics. Therefore, filtering for Sativa in strain directories will mostly yield Sativa-dominant hybrids with a 60 to 80 percent Sativa content.
Effect profile, terpenes and consumption context
The effect profile is considered cerebral, activating, and talkative: enhanced association, focus on music or conversation, and less physical heaviness. Terpenewise, this profile is characterized by limonene (citrus, uplifts mood), terpinolene (fresh, herbal, typical in Haze lines), and alpha-pinene (pine, associated with alert perception). However, this activating nature can also have a downside: with high-THC Sativas, sensitive individuals more frequently report racing thoughts, a racing heart, or restlessness. For CBD flowers with less than 1 percent THC, this risk is largely eliminated; the citrus-herbal aroma remains and is popular for daytime use or before creative work. As a rule of thumb: Sativa profiles are suited for activity and social contact, not for falling asleep.
Legal status and availability in Switzerland
The Swiss 1 percent limit for total THC also applies to Sativas. Sativa-dominant CBD strains are legally available, while high-THC variants are only accessible via prescription or pilot trials. A Swiss specific: because Sativas require long cycles and significant height in indoor cultivation, many local Sativa CBD flowers are grown in greenhouses or outdoors. This is not a quality defect, but it does alter the appearance and terpene density – indoor flowers tend to look more compact and aromatic, whereas outdoor flowers are often cheaper. Price comparisons should therefore always evaluate cultivation method, THC/CBD levels, and lab reports together. On the road, regardless of the category: the detection limit for THC in blood is 1.5 µg/L; even CBD flowers can lead to positive test results with heavy consumption.
Selection, dosing and storage in practice
For those starting with Sativa profiles, a low initial dose and a vaporizer set to 175 to 185 °C are recommended – in this range, limonene and terpinolene release without burning the aroma. Anyone prone to nervousness should choose strains containing beta-caryophyllene or a CBD-rich hybrid instead of pushing for a pure Haze line. When buying, it is worth checking the harvest date: terpinolene is highly volatile, and older batches lose noticeable freshness. Storage in glass, in a dark place and with a humidity regulator, keeps the profile stable for significantly longer than a paper bag. If you want to integrate Sativa strains into your daily routine, document the dosage and time for two weeks – individual differences are greater than the differences between two strains.

FAQ
What makes a Sativa 'cerebral'?
Sativas contain more limonene, pinene and terpinolene. These terpenes act synergistically with THC to produce the characteristic clear, energetic head-high.
Which Sativa is the most energising?
Classics like Durban Poison, Green Crack, Sour Diesel and Jack Herer are considered the most energising — rich in limonene and terpinolene.
Are Sativas legal in Switzerland?
Only Sativas under 1% THC are legal as CBD flowers. Full-THC Sativas only via pilot projects or a prescription.
Why are pure Sativas more expensive?
With flowering times of 10 to 16 weeks, they require significantly longer cultivation, more height, and yield less per square meter. These cultivation costs are directly reflected in the price per gram.
Are Sativa strains suitable for working?
CBD-dominant Sativa profiles are frequently used during the day. However, they are no substitute for sobriety: reaction times and concentration can be affected, and there is zero tolerance for impairment when driving or operating machinery.
