Girl Scout Cookies (GSC): The Complete Guide
Girl Scout Cookies — GSC for short — is the strain that defined the 2010s California cannabis renaissance. Born in the Bay Area underground (San Francisco, Cookie Fam), GSC became the global reference for sweet, dessert-style aromas combined with potent hybrid effect — and the mother of entire strain families like Wedding Cake, Sunset Sherbet and Gelato.
GSC is an indica-leaning hybrid (60/40) with 25–28% THC, dominant caryophyllene-limonene profile and sweet-earthy cookie-dessert aroma. Genetics: OG Kush × Durban Poison (+ likely F1 Cherry Kush). Effects: strong head high with warm body stone, euphoric and relaxing at once. Medical use: chronic pain, appetite loss, nausea, stress. In Switzerland only as CBD phenotype on the open market; THC version via medical prescription.

History: from Bay Area underground to global icon
Girl Scout Cookies emerged around 2012 in San Francisco around the Cookie Fam collective led by Berner (Cookies Brand) and Jigga (Cookie Fam Genetics). The strain first appeared in California's medical dispensary market and within two years became the symbol of a new generation of sweet, dessert-style cannabis strains.
GSC won the 2013 and 2014 High Times Cannabis Cups in Los Angeles and San Francisco. By 2015 the genetics had left the Bay Area and were being grown in Colorado, Washington, Canada, Spain and the Netherlands. Hundreds of GSC crosses exist today, many of which have reached fame in their own right — Wedding Cake, Gelato, Sunset Sherbet and Animal Cookies among them.
Genetics & phenotypes
Official genetics: OG Kush × Durban Poison. Some sources also cite an F1 Cherry Kush influence on the maternal line. The combination is unusual: OG Kush brings heavy, body-narcotic indica character; Durban Poison is a pure South African sativa landrace with clear, energetic head high. The hybridization produces the signature «head meets body» effect.
Several stable phenotypes emerged from the original line: Thin Mint Cookies (lighter, minty, slimmer growth), Forum Cut (densest trichomes, most classic aroma), Platinum Cookies (silvery buds, highest THC) and Animal Cookies (cross with Fire OG, physically heavier).
THC, CBD and cannabinoid profile
Average THC: 25–28%, top phenotypes (Platinum Cookies) up to 30%. CBD typically < 0.2% — pure THC strain. This places GSC among the most potent commercially available strains worldwide.
Secondary cannabinoids: CBG (0.3–0.7%), trace CBC. High THC plus pronounced caryophyllene produces the fast, intense effect. Unlike classic indicas, sedation does not set in immediately — the head high comes first.
FAQ
Is Girl Scout Cookies indica or sativa?
Indica-leaning hybrid (≈60/40 indica/sativa). The Durban Poison heritage produces the pronounced sativa head component at the start of the effect.
How much THC does GSC contain?
Typically 25–28%, up to 30% in top phenotypes (Platinum Cookies) — among the most potent commercial strains worldwide.
Why is it called «GSC»?
After a trademark challenge from the Girl Scouts of America, the strain is marketed as «GSC» in most markets. The genetics did not change.
Which phenotypes exist?
Four main ones: Thin Mint Cookies, Forum Cut, Platinum Cookies and Animal Cookies. Forum Cut is regarded by breeders as the «true» GSC.
Which terpene dominates?
β-caryophyllene, followed by limonene and humulene. Hence the sweet-earthy-spicy cookie aroma.
How long does the effect last?
Inhaled: onset at 5–10 min, peak at 30–45 min, main effect 2–3 hours, comedown another 1–2 hours.
What is GSC used for medically?
Frequently: chronic pain, severe nausea (chemo), appetite loss, stress and sleep disorders. Especially known for its strong appetite-stimulating effect.
Is GSC legal in Switzerland?
The THC version (> 1% THC) only via medical prescription. CBD-dominant GSC cuts under 1% THC are openly available.
