Sour Diesel: The Complete Guide to the Iconic Sativa
Sour Diesel — or « Sour D » — is arguably the most influential sativa in modern cannabis history. Born in early-1990s New York, it is now the genetic mother of countless hybrids (Sour Dubb, NYC Diesel, Sour OG) and a benchmark for energising, cerebral effects with an unmistakable diesel aroma.
Sour Diesel is a sativa-dominant strain (≈70/30) with 22–26% THC, a dominant terpinolene-caryophyllene profile and immediate, energising head effects. Genetics: Chemdawg 91 × Super Skunk (with Massachusetts Super Skunk input). Aroma: sharp diesel, citrus peak, earthy base. Effects: euphoric, creative, anti-fatigue — best for morning and daytime. Medically used for depression, chronic fatigue, migraine. In Switzerland only legal in psychoactive form via medical prescription.

History: How Sour Diesel became iconic
The original Sour Diesel emerged between 1991 and 1993 in the US — the exact origin is still debated. The most-accepted version: a breeder named AJ on Staten Island selected a phenotype from a batch of Chemdawg 91 seeds (themselves from a bag traded at a Grateful Dead concert — the famous « Dog Bud »). He crossed that phenotype with a Super Skunk mother and an additional Massachusetts Super Skunk father. The result: a strain of unmatched energy, a strongly acidic fuel-like aroma, and a clone that travelled hand to hand across the northeastern US.
By the early 2000s, Sour Diesel became the strain of choice for the New York hip-hop scene and established itself on the west coast as the daytime sativa par excellence. It won multiple High Times Cannabis Cups, founded the « Diesel » term in cannabis aromatics, and is the mother of hybrids including Gorilla Glue #4 (via Chocolate Diesel), Sour Dubb, NYC Diesel and Sour OG.
Genetics & lineage
Official genetics: Chemdawg 91 × Super Skunk × Massachusetts Super Skunk. Some lines incorporate Northern Lights as a stabiliser. The Chemdawg root is shared with OG Kush and Gorilla Glue #4 — all from the same genetic cluster.
Chemdawg brings raw potency and the diesel character. Super Skunk contributes fast flowering and the sweet, earthy underlayer. The Massachusetts Super Skunk input boosts resin and pushes THC higher.
THC, CBD and cannabinoids
Sour Diesel delivers 22–26% THC on average, with premium lots above 28%. CBD is negligible (< 0.1%) — a pure THC strain without CBD modulation, hence the sharp psychoactivity.
Secondary cannabinoids: CBG (0.3–0.8%) and trace THCV. CBG supports mental clarity; THCV traces explain the appetite-neutral to -suppressing effect — fewer munchies than with an indica.
FAQ
Is Sour Diesel indica or sativa?
Sativa-dominant (≈70/30). The effect is clearly cerebral and energising.
How much THC?
22–26% on average, up to 28% in premium lots. CBD below 0.1%.
Where does the name come from?
« Sour » for the acidic-citrus aroma, « Diesel » for the fuel note. Both stem from the Chemdawg genetics.
Dominant terpene?
Terpinolene and β-caryophyllene, then myrcene and limonene.
Fast acting?
Yes — one of the fastest onset curves: 2–5 minutes vaporised.
Good for evenings?
Not really. The energising effect can interfere with sleep. Use Northern Lights or an indica-dominant hybrid instead.
Can it cause paranoia?
Possible in sensitive users or at high doses. THC and terpinolene are stimulating.
Legal in Switzerland?
Psychoactive form prescription only. CBD-dominant cuts under 1% THC are openly available.
