Methodology: how this tool calculates

The pilot project map covers the authorised trials for regulated cannabis supply in Switzerland, based on authorisations under Article 8a of the Narcotics Act and information from the cities and institutions running them.

The calculation step by step

  1. 1. Record the projects

Every authorised project is recorded with location, operator, start date, participant count and duration.

  2. 2. Normalise status

We harmonise states into "planned", "running" and "completed", because projects communicate differently.

  3. 3. Check eligibility

Residence in the study region, adulthood and pre-existing consumption are the recurring conditions; deviations are noted per project.

  4. 4. Render map and list

Data is rendered both as a map and a filterable list so regional and status questions are both answered.

Worked example

  • Question: "Can I take part in Zurich?"
  • Filter region Zurich → running project requiring city residence.
  • Criteria: 18+, pre-existing consumption, provable residence.
  • Result: participation only with Zurich residence; otherwise the legal CBD channel remains the alternative.

Limits of the method

  • Participant slots are limited and often full; the map shows authorisations, not open places.
  • Project details change; we update periodically, not in real time.
  • Pilot trials are scientific studies, not a regular retail channel.

Data basis

  • Authorisations under Art. 8a NarcA and FOPH publications.
  • Information from participating cities, universities and study partners.

Frequently asked questions about the tool

Can tourists participate?

No. Every pilot project requires residence in the respective study region.

Are products cheaper in pilot trials?

Not fundamentally; prices track black-market levels to avoid distorting behaviour.

What happens after a study ends?

Results feed into legislation, especially the work on the planned Cannabis Products Act.
