How many people in Switzerland use cannabis – CBD and THC? Official figures from the Swiss Health Survey (FSO), the Swiss addiction monitoring system (MonAM / FOPH) and Sucht Schweiz paint a clear picture. All values are survey-based or estimates – we link the original source next to every number.

THC use in Switzerland: the official numbers

• 4.0% of people aged 15–64 used cannabis in the last 30 days – about 230,000 people (extrapolated from ~5.7 million Swiss residents in this age group). Source: FOPH/Obsan, MonAM 2022.
• 7.6% in the last 12 months – about 430,000 people. Stable since 2017 (MonAM/FOPH 2022).
• More than one in three Swiss residents has tried cannabis at least once in their life. Source: FOPH – Cannabis: facts and figures.
• Men 5.5% vs. women 2.5% in the last 30 days – men consume roughly twice as often (MonAM 2022).
• Among 14–15 year-olds about 8% report current cannabis use, slightly decreasing. Source: FOPH MonAM – Cannabis and other drugs.

Despite its illegal status for THC, cannabis remains by far the most-used illegal substance in Switzerland (FOPH 2025).

CBD use in Switzerland: legal market, fewer hard numbers

CBD products (THC < 1%) have been legal in Switzerland since 2011. Unlike THC, there is no official population statistic – the figures below are study-based estimates, labelled as such:

• The uWeed/IG Hanf CBD consumer study 2021 (1,100+ respondents) shows CBD is mainly used for relaxation, sleep and pain. Source: uWeed & IG Hanf 2021.
• A study commissioned by the FOPH (Aramis, 2019) describes the CBD market as a mass market with several hundred thousand consumers, without an exact figure. Source: FOPH / Aramis CBD study.
• More than 900 companies are registered with the FOPH/Swiss customs for CBD tobacco-substitute production (FOPH, 2024).

Note: Earlier claims of „up to 1 million CBD users" are not backed by an official survey. A realistic reading is several hundred thousand adults using CBD regularly or occasionally – the exact number is unknown.

Pilot trials & the future of the THC market

Since 2023, regulated pilot trials with THC cannabis run in Zurich, Basel, Bern, Lausanne and Lucerne. Thousands of adults legally buy lab-tested cannabis there – a first step toward a regulated national market (FOPH, ongoing studies).
