Methodology: how this tool calculates

The dose calculator turns "start low, go slow" into a transparent calculation. The basis is the active compound in milligrams, corrected for route of administration and your experience level.

The calculation step by step

  1. 1. Determine active amount

    Grams × percentage × 10 = milligrams. 1 g at 10% equals 100 mg.

  2. 2. Apply bioavailability

Not all of it reaches your bloodstream: roughly 25–30% inhaled, 6–20% oral, in between sublingually. We use conservative midpoints.

  3. 3. Experience factor

Beginners start at the lower end of the target range, experienced users at the upper end. CBD ranges are wider than THC ranges.

  4. 4. Portioning

The target amount is converted into a single portion with a wait time: 10–15 minutes inhaled, 90–120 minutes oral before redosing.

Worked example

  • Product: 0.5 g flower at 12% CBD → 0.5 × 12 × 10 = 60 mg CBD in the material.
  • Inhaled at 27% bioavailability → roughly 16 mg systemically available.
  • Beginner target 5–10 mg → about one third of the 0.5 g as a first portion.
  • Wait 15 minutes, then repeat the same portion if needed.

Limits of the method

  • Bioavailability varies widely with technique, device, stomach contents and metabolism.
  • Drug interactions (including via CYP450) are not modelled.
  • Not medical advice: with illness, pregnancy or ongoing medication, consult a physician.

Data basis

  • Published bioavailability ranges from pharmacological literature.
  • Dosing practice from Swiss pilot trials and medical dispensing.

Frequently asked questions about the tool

Why is the oral dose higher than the inhaled one?

Because first-pass metabolism in the liver removes a large share of what you swallow, so less reaches circulation.

Does this apply to THC too?

The math is identical but the target ranges are much narrower; in Switzerland the 1.0% limit applies to freely sold products.

How often can I redose?

Only after full onset: 10–15 minutes inhaled, no earlier than 90–120 minutes orally.
