Cannabis Edibles Switzerland 2026: Recipe, Dosing, Onset & Legality | CannabisClub.ch
Make cannabis edibles at home: decarboxylation, cannabutter, dosing, onset, and Swiss legal status — with THC-free CBD options.
What are edibles, how are they made, how do you dose them correctly, and what is legal in Switzerland? This guide explains the fundamentals of cannabis edibles — from decarboxylation and cannabutter to THC-free CBD versions — for beginners and experienced consumers alike.
TL;DR — cannabis edibles in Switzerland
- Edibles = edible cannabis products (brownies, gummies, oil, capsules)
- Decarboxylation required: raw flower must be heated for THC/CBD to become active
- Onset: 30–90 minutes, duration 4–8 hours
- Legal in Switzerland: CBD edibles under 1% THC; THC edibles only by prescription or pilot project
- Beginner dose: 2.5–5 mg THC; 10–25 mg CBD
What are cannabis edibles?
Edibles are foods that contain cannabis or cannabis extracts. The most common forms are brownies, cookies, gummies, chocolate, drinks, and capsules. Unlike smoking or vaping, cannabis is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, which fundamentally changes the effect:
- Delayed onset: 30–90 minutes, sometimes longer
- Longer duration: 4–8 hours, sometimes longer with high doses
- Stronger effect: the liver converts THC to 11-OH-THC, which is more potent than inhaled THC
- Less lung harm: no combustion products
Decarboxylation: the most important step
Fresh cannabis flowers contain mainly THCA and CBDA — the inactive acid forms. Only when heated do they become THC and CBD. This process is called decarboxylation.
- Oven method: coarsely grind flower, spread on baking paper, 110–120 °C, 30–40 minutes
- Sous-vide: 95 °C, 90 minutes — low odour and precise
- CBD flower needs longer: 120 °C, 45 minutes
Detailed guide: Decarboxylation guide.
Basic recipe: cannabutter
Cannabutter is the base for most baked goods. The fat binds the lipophilic cannabinoids and makes them bioavailable.
Ingredients
- 250 g butter
- 7–14 g decarboxylated flower (depending on desired strength)
- 500 ml water
Preparation
- Warm butter and water in a pot over low heat
- Add decarbed flower and simmer for 2–3 hours (do not boil!)
- Strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth
- Cool in the fridge — the butter solidifies on top, water stays below
- Drain the water, pat butter dry, and store refrigerated
Tip: THC butter is psychoactive. For THC-free CBD edibles use CBD isolate or decarbed CBD flower with a lab certificate. CBD flower is available here: CBD flowers Switzerland.
Dosage: how many mg per serving?
Correct dosing is crucial with edibles — overdoses are common because the effect is delayed.
- THC beginners: 2.5–5 mg per serving
- THC experienced: 10–20 mg per serving
- THC high dose: from 25 mg — only for experienced consumers
- CBD edibles: 10–25 mg CBD per serving, typical for relaxation
Worked example: 10 g of flower at 18% THC = 1,800 mg THC. After extraction losses (about 80% yield) ~1,440 mg remain. With 24 brownies = 60 mg per brownie. Far too strong for beginners — either reduce portion size or dilute the butter.

Onset and duration
Edibles work slower than smoking but longer and often more intensely. The effect depends on stomach contents, metabolism, and dose:
- Empty stomach: onset in 30–45 minutes, stronger
- Full stomach: onset in 60–120 minutes, more even
- Peak: after 2–3 hours
- After-effects: possible up to 8–12 hours
Golden rule: Never redose after 60 minutes because "nothing is happening". The effect can still arrive and then be surprisingly strong.
Legal status in Switzerland
Swiss food law strictly distinguishes between CBD and THC:
- CBD edibles: Legal as long as THC content is below 1% and they are marketed as food, not medicine. CBD oil, CBD flower, and CBD isolate are the common ingredients.
- THC edibles: Not freely sold. THC-containing products are only accessible by prescription or within a pilot project/social club. Home cultivation for personal use is not legal.
- Driving fitness: THC edibles can endanger your driver's licence. Do not drive for at least 24 hours, better 48 hours, after consumption.
Current legal status: Weed Switzerland legal 2026.
CBD edibles vs. THC edibles
For most Swiss users, CBD edibles are the safer entry point. They are not psychoactive, legally available, and can promote relaxation, pain relief, and better sleep. THC edibles are much stronger, psychoactive, and only legal in specific contexts.
Safety tips for edibles
- Always label — "Contains cannabis" and dose per serving
- Keep away from children, pets, and uninvolved persons
- Do not combine with alcohol
- For first tests, stay at home and do not drive
- Wait for the effect before redosing
