Medical Cannabis for Anxiety Disorders — Switzerland 2026
Anxiety disorders are a double-edged topic for cannabis — CBD helps, high THC can trigger anxiety. What works, what doesn't, and how to get a serious prescription.
In anxiety disorders CBD (oral oil, 25–75 mg/day) is the best-documented cannabis option. High-dose THC often worsens anxiety — only microdosing (1–2.5 mg) combined with CBD makes sense. Best indications: social phobia, generalised anxiety, PTSD-related anxiety. Prescription: cannabis-trained psychiatrist or dedicated clinic. CannabisClub members: 50 CHF flat.
CBD, THC and anxiety — what the evidence shows
CBD (25–75 mg oral) significantly reduces anxiety symptoms in generalised anxiety, social phobia and PTSD-related anxiety. Onset within 1–2 h, no high, good tolerability.
THC has a biphasic effect: low-dose (1–5 mg) mildly anxiolytic, higher dose (>7.5 mg) often anxiogenic — especially in cannabis-naive people or those prone to panic.
Preparations & dosing
Full-spectrum CBD oil (10–20%): starting dose 15 mg twice daily, slow titration to 25–50 mg twice daily. Important: pharma-grade tested oil, no online discount.
Microdose dronabinol: 1–2.5 mg in the evening for PTSD nightmares, optionally combined with CBD in the morning.
Prescription in Switzerland
Requirement: confirmed diagnosis (ICD-10 F40–F43), failure or intolerance of SSRIs/SNRIs (escitalopram, venlafaxine, sertraline) and/or behavioural therapy.
Best route: cannabis-trained psychiatrist or dedicated clinic. Via CannabisClub: 50 CHF flat for first consultation and prescription for Swiss residents.
FAQ
Can cannabis worsen anxiety?
Yes, high-dose THC often — especially in inexperienced users or those prone to panic. CBD and low-dose THC:CBD reliably reduce anxiety instead.
Is CBD alone enough?
For many patients yes. CBD (25–75 mg/day) has significant anxiolytic effects without psychoactive impact. THC is then optional, microdosed.
Does insurance cover cannabis for anxiety?
Rarely — only in treatment-resistant anxiety or as part of PTSD therapy. Coverage under Art. 71a HIO required.
Can I drive on CBD therapy?
Usually yes — CBD is not psychoactive and does not produce a legally relevant THC level. Exception: combined preparations containing THC.
