Cannabis Prescription in Switzerland — Complete 2026 Guide
Since August 2022, medical cannabis in Switzerland can be prescribed on a normal narcotics prescription — no FOPH exemption required. We break down requirements, indications, costs and how members can book a consultation for CHF 50.
Since 1 August 2022, any Swiss physician can prescribe cannabis preparations (flower, tinctures, dronabinol, Sativex) on a normal narcotics prescription. No FOPH exemption needed. Dispensed at selected pharmacies. Cost: CHF 10–15/g — insurance coverage is rare. CannabisClub members pay CHF 50 for the consultation instead of around CHF 190 on the open market.
What changed in 2022
Before August 2022, every cannabis prescription required an individual exemption from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). Slow, bureaucratic, off-putting for many doctors — patient numbers stayed low.
With the Narcotics Act revision (NarcA, Art. 8a) effective 1 August 2022, that barrier fell. Cannabis medicines became regular narcotics — prescribable by any licensed Swiss physician on an official narcotics prescription.
Which conditions get cannabis prescribed?
Common Swiss indications: chronic pain (especially neuropathic), MS spasticity, nausea and appetite loss (chemo, HIV), severe sleep disorders, treatment-resistant epilepsy, palliative care.
Off-label use is growing for ADHD, endometriosis, migraine, Tourette and selected psychiatric indications — when standard therapies are exhausted and the risks are acceptable.
Which cannabis preparations are available?
Cannabis flower (THC) — dried, controlled genetics, vaporiser recommended. Typical strains: Bedrocan, Bedrobinol, Bediol.
Full extracts & tinctures — sublingual dosing, smooth titration. Often as magistral compounds at the pharmacy.
What does prescription cannabis cost?
Cannabis flower at the pharmacy: CHF 10–15/g. Tinctures and extracts: CHF 80–250 per pack depending on concentration. Dronabinol: around CHF 100 per 30 ml.
The pharmacy buys flower at roughly CHF 3.50/g wholesale — the rest is margin, storage, regulatory overhead and counselling. A high daily dose can easily reach CHF 500–1'500 per month.
FAQ
Do I still need an FOPH exemption for a cannabis prescription?
No. Since 1 August 2022, a normal narcotics prescription from any Swiss physician is enough. The individual FOPH exemption was abolished.
Which doctor can prescribe cannabis in Switzerland?
Any physician licensed in Switzerland. In practice: specialised GPs, pain specialists, neurologists and dedicated cannabis clinics.
How much does 1 g of medical cannabis cost at the pharmacy?
Typically CHF 10–15/g for flower. A monthly supply can run CHF 200–1'500 depending on indication and dose.
How much is the cannabis consultation?
Open market: around CHF 190 for a 15-minute video call. CannabisClub members with Swiss residency: CHF 50 flat for first consultation and prescription.
Does health insurance cover medical cannabis?
Basic insurance rarely (Sativex® for MS, Epidyolex® for some epilepsies). More often via supplementary insurance with a cost approval — never guaranteed.
Which conditions qualify?
Chronic/neuropathic pain, MS spasticity, chemo-induced nausea, severe sleep disorders, treatment-resistant epilepsy, palliative care. Off-label: ADHD, migraine, endometriosis, Tourette.
What forms are available on prescription?
Flower (Bedrocan, Bediol), extracts/tinctures, dronabinol, Sativex®, Epidyolex®. The choice depends on indication and dosing needs.
Can I travel with my Swiss cannabis prescription?
Within Schengen, with a Schengen certificate (Art. 75) valid for up to 30 days. Outside Europe: local laws apply and are often restrictive. Check before travel.
Can I drive on a cannabis prescription?
Not automatically. THC behind the wheel can trigger proceedings even with a prescription. A formal fitness-to-drive assessment is usually required.
How long until I get my cannabis?
1–3 days if the pharmacy stocks the strain. 1–2 weeks for special orders or magistral compounds.
Can I get cannabis without documented prior treatments?
Generally no. A serious physician expects a diagnosis, prior therapies and a clear medical rationale.
Typical dosages?
Very individual. THC flower: 0.1–0.3 g/day at start, slow titration. Dronabinol: 2.5–10 mg per dose, several times a day.
What about workplace drug testing?
A valid prescription protects you legally but not automatically under employment law — especially in safety-critical roles. Discuss with occupational health early.
Can I switch from CBD to THC?
Yes if the indication justifies it. It's a medical decision, not an upgrade.
How do I become a member and access the CHF 50 consultation?
Registration takes two minutes. After verification you start the medical onboarding and book a partner physician — fully digital.
