Medical Cannabis for PTSD — Switzerland 2026

In post-traumatic stress disorder, cannabinoids are one of the few options with RCT evidence against resistant nightmares. Much cheaper for members.

In PTSD, THC preparations — notably nabilone (Cesamet) 0.5–2 mg at night — significantly reduce trauma-related nightmares (Jetly 2015). THC:CBD combinations improve sleep, hyperarousal and avoidance. CBD adds anxiolysis (25–50 mg). Prescription: cannabis-trained psychiatrist. CannabisClub members: 50 CHF flat instead of 190.

What the studies show

Jetly 2015 (RCT, Canadian soldiers): nabilone 0.5–3 mg significantly reduces CAPS-nightmare score vs placebo. Strongest RCT evidence for cannabinoids in PTSD to date.

Roitman 2014 (open study): dronabinol 5 mg twice daily lowers total CAPS score, hyperarousal and sleep disturbance in veterans.

Preparations & dosing

Nabilone (Cesamet®) 0.5–2 mg at night, primarily against nightmares — preferred first line.

Dronabinol 2.5–5 mg at night as alternative on intolerance.

FAQ

Does cannabis replace my trauma therapy?

No. Cannabis manages symptoms (nightmares, sleep, hyperarousal) — trauma processing (EMDR, CBT) remains core.

How much does CannabisClub membership save in PTSD?

On monthly follow-up (2,280 CHF/year external) you pay 600 CHF as member — 1,680 CHF saved. Registration free.

Does insurance cover cannabis for PTSD?

Possible in treatment-resistant PTSD, Art. 71a HIO coverage. Nabilone is pricier than generic dronabinol; insurers prefer the latter.
