Cannabis in Swiss hotels and holiday rentals: what guests should check

Cannabis and CBD in Swiss hotels, chalets and holiday rentals: check room rules, balconies, vaping and medical use before booking your stay.

Your accommodation is booked, and perhaps you are arranging a delivery there too. But can you use your cannabis product in the room or on the balcony? That question involves three separate checks: whether the product is lawful, which rules apply to the location and what the accommodation permits. This guide helps you work through them before a stay in Switzerland, whether you choose a hotel, hostel, chalet or holiday apartment.

A hotel address, a balcony or CannabisClub.ch membership is not permission to consume. Check the product and your access route, then the law and the booking conditions. Before booking, clarify the particular product, method of use and location if anything is unclear. A host’s agreement cannot override a legal prohibition.

1. Product, location and accommodation: three separate checks

THC content matters, but it does not settle every legal question. Depending on the product category, cannabis below 1% THC is still subject to other requirements; a CBD label is not a general clearance. There is no unrestricted recreational retail market for THC cannabis. Medical prescribing and authorised pilot trials are separate access routes with their own conditions. A short hotel stay does not replace a prescription or a trial’s admission requirements.

Next comes the location. Enclosed spaces open to the public and shared workplaces fall within statutory smoke protection, and cantons can impose stricter rules. The establishment’s own conditions also matter. Being able to obtain a product lawfully is therefore different from being allowed to use it where you are staying. An accepted order does not answer the question of permission to consume.

2. Guest rooms, shared spaces and balconies

Booking a guest room does not give you the right to set your own smoking rules. Read the room description and the hotel’s rules on smoking, vaping and other devices. Even ‘smoking room’ may not specify every product the establishment permits. Ask for confirmation covering your intended use in that room; a general answer about cigarettes does not resolve every cannabis-related question.

Do not extend any permission for a room to the lobby, breakfast room, corridors or lift. A balcony or terrace is not automatically an alternative either. Booking conditions may include those spaces, and smoke can reach other rooms, guests or staff. If a designated area exists, check its actual rules and keep clear of other people’s entrances and windows.

What to ask about each area

AreaCheck beforehand
Guest roomWhich smoking and vaping rules apply to the specific room booked?
Balcony or terraceIs the intended use expressly permitted without exposing others?
Shared spacesWhich statutory and house restrictions apply?
Designated smoking areaWhich products and devices does the permission actually cover?

3. Holiday apartments, chalets and Airbnb stays

For temporary accommodation, the actual contractual arrangement and agreed conditions matter. The description ‘holiday rental’ alone does not determine every right. Do not automatically apply guidance about a long-term residential tenancy to a tourist stay. Review the listing, additional conditions and host messages, particularly where there is a general smoking ban or shared accommodation.

Ask in writing whether the rules also cover CBD flower, a vaporiser and outdoor spaces. Identify the exact location, such as the private balcony, rather than asking only about using it ‘outside’. Resolve conflicting information before committing to a booking. If the use is essential for you and a suitable arrangement cannot be agreed, choose appropriate accommodation rather than relying on an unstated exception later.

4. Vaping and prescribed treatment: no blanket exception

Less noticeable smell does not automatically make a device permissible. Statutory smoke protection also covers electronic cigarettes and certain heated products; the precise classification depends on the product. An establishment may additionally prohibit vapes or vaporisers. Be explicit about your method of use. An open window, bathroom extractor or disabled smoke alarm is not a solution: leave safety equipment untouched.

If you use prescribed cannabis medicine, plan how your treatment and accommodation can work together before travelling. Explain the practical requirements without sharing more health information than necessary. A prescription is not blanket permission to smoke or vaporise anywhere. Do not change the medicine, dose or administration route yourself because of a house rule; discuss any necessary adjustment with your treating professional in good time.

5. Your checks before booking and arrival

Ask the person responsible for the accommodation, rather than relying only on a booking platform or a contributor to a travel forum. Keep the reply with your booking confirmation. A useful answer identifies the product or method of use, the permitted location and any restrictions. It still does not replace checking what the law allows.

Parcel acceptance is a separate arrangement. Ask whether the accommodation accepts deliveries for registered guests, under which name and during which dates. For a short stay, do not rely on an unconfirmed delivery day. Reception may accept a parcel while prohibiting use of its contents anywhere on the premises. Check available offers and delivery terms separately; a guide does not promise that a product is currently available for delivery.

Before confirming your booking

A short message to the accommodation

Hello. I am considering a stay from [date] to [date]. What rules apply to [product and method of use] in the booked room and on [specific outdoor area]? Is there a designated area for this use? Please confirm the conditions before I book. I would arrange any parcel acceptance with you separately.

6. During your stay and before departure

Keep products in clearly labelled packaging, out of reach of children and other guests. A shared kitchen, minibar or accessible shelf is not automatically suitable storage. Follow the specific instructions for medicines. Even in a permitted outdoor area, avoid exposing others to smoke or aerosols; an air freshener does not remove that exposure.

If someone complains, calmly establish which rule is involved and how the rest of your stay can be organised. If cleaning or damage charges are requested, ask for the contractual basis and an understandable breakdown rather than assuming there is one standard charge throughout Switzerland. Plan your return journey separately: lawful purchase in Switzerland does not automatically permit crossing a border. Check travel documents for medicines and the lawful handling of leftovers; do not simply give them to other guests.

Frequently asked questions

Can I smoke CBD in a non-smoking room?
CBD does not override smoking restrictions. Check the conditions for the particular room and ask if unclear; low THC content does not create an exception.
Is cannabis automatically allowed on a hotel balcony?
No. Clarify use of that balcony and respect the rules, other guests and neighbours.
Does accepting my parcel mean I can use the product there?
No. Parcel acceptance and use of its contents are separate questions. Obtain separate confirmation for each.
Can I vaporise in the room because I am not smoking?
Not automatically. The law and house conditions can also cover devices without combustion. Ask specifically about your device and product.
Does a prescription provide a general exception?
It is not permission for every location. Make practical arrangements with the accommodation and your treating professional without changing treatment yourself.
Can I take leftover cannabis home?
Obtaining it in Switzerland is not enough. Check the product, exit, destination and transit rules, along with any necessary medicine documents, before travelling.
