Novel cannabinoids in Switzerland — HHC, THCP, H4CBD & Co.
HHC, THCP, H4CBD, Delta-8 and Delta-10 — the new generation of semi-synthetic cannabinoids is flooding Europe. What's in them, how they act, what is legal in Switzerland.
Semi-synthetic cannabinoids (HHC, Δ8, THCP…) are made by chemically converting legal CBD. Effects range from mildly psychoactive (Δ8) to far more potent than Δ9-THC (THCP). In Switzerland, HHC is on the controlled-substances list since July 2023 — illegal. THCP, HHC-P, Δ8, Δ10 are captured by the generic 'THC isomers' clause. Safety: little long-term data, purity often unclear. We advise against use.
Why so many new cannabinoids all of a sudden
The 2018 US Farm Bill legalised hemp under 0.3% Δ9-THC and created a legal CBD surplus. Chemists found simple acid-isomerisation routes to convert it into psychoactive cannabinoids. The 'grey' cannabinoid market was born.
In Europe the same players exploit Switzerland's 1% threshold and Germany's CBD surplus. HHC appeared in 2022, THCP and HHC-P followed in 2023–2024. Regulators are behind.
The main novel cannabinoids
HHC: hydrogenation of THC. ~70–80% of Δ9-THC's potency.
HHC-P: HHC with an extended alkyl side chain. Much more potent, barely studied.
Swiss legal status
Switzerland lists cannabinoids individually in the ordinance on the narcotic schedules (BetmVV-EDI). HHC has been listed since 15 July 2023: production, trade, possession and use are all offences.
Δ8-THC, Δ10-THC and THCP fall under the generic 'THC isomers' clause when they are psychoactive — de facto illegal. HHC-P is expected to be listed shortly. H4CBD remains legally grey.
Safety — why we advise against
These are not natural molecules: isomerisation leaves by-products (acids, metal catalysts) that are rarely cleanly removed. German analyses in 2023 found impurities in > 40% of HHC vapes.
No long-term data. THCP has no human safety studies. Emergency rooms report more acute anxiety attacks, tachycardia, vomiting — especially from vape use without dosing experience.
FAQ
Is HHC legal in Switzerland?
No. HHC is on the Swiss narcotic schedule since 15 July 2023. Production, trade, possession and use are punishable.
And THCP, HHC-P, Δ8, Δ10?
Captured as illegal via the generic 'THC isomers' clause when psychoactive. Explicit listing follows step by step.
Is H4CBD legal?
Grey zone. Not explicitly listed, but without safety data or authorisation not marketable as food or supplement.
Why are these cannabinoids everywhere?
Chemical conversion of legal CBD — regulatory arbitrage inherited from the US Farm Bill, imported into Europe.
More dangerous than natural THC?
Not necessarily the molecule, but the production: impurities, unclear dosing, no long-term data.
