HHC in Switzerland — effects, risks and why it's illegal

HHC was Europe's trending cannabinoid in 2022–2023, until Switzerland banned it in July 2023. Molecule, effects and current legal status.

HHC is produced by hydrogenating THC (via CBD). Effect ~70–80% of Δ9-THC, but with more reports of anxiety and tachycardia. On the Swiss narcotics list since 15 July 2023 — production, trade, possession and use are punishable.

What is HHC chemically?

HHC is a hydrogenated cannabinoid: two hydrogen atoms are added to the THC backbone. The molecule becomes more chemically stable but loses its characteristic double bond.

Commercially it is almost never made from THC, but from CBD in two steps: CBD → Δ8-THC → HHC.

How strong is HHC?

User reports and the few studies suggest 70–80% of Δ9-THC's potency, with a longer duration.

Downside: many reports of anxiety, tachycardia and nausea, especially with HHC vapes of unclear concentration.

Swiss legal status

By ordinance amendment of 15 July 2023, HHC is listed in schedule d of BetmVV-EDI. The full narcotics regime applies.

Use, possession, sale and production fall under BetmG — fixed-penalty fine for very small amounts, criminal proceedings for trade. Importing from Germany is also illegal.

Why we do not offer HHC

Legally excluded, and quality-wise risky: HHC batches often contain a mix of 9R/9S epimers with different effects, plus residual solvents and catalysts.

Our focus stays on clean Swiss CBD under 1% THC and, once legal, natural THC cannabis from indoor cultivation.

FAQ

Is HHC still legal in Switzerland?

No, since 15 July 2023 it is listed as a controlled substance.

Does HHC show on a drug test?

Standard THC tests target THC metabolites, not HHC directly. But Switzerland's 1% blood-THC limit applies and HHC use is punishable under BetmG.

Is HHC safer than THC?

No — rather the opposite: semi-synthetic production, unclear purity, no long-term data.

Why was HHC banned?

Lack of safety data, high youth consumption, several emergency-room reports with HHC vapes.
