Terpenes — why every cannabis strain feels different

Terpenes are hemp's aromatic oils. They define smell, taste — and combined with cannabinoids, a large part of the effects. Understanding strains starts with understanding terpenes.

Terpenes are volatile oils in the flower's trichomes. Over 200 identified in cannabis. Entourage effect: myrcene sedates, limonene lifts mood, linalool calms, caryophyllene anti-inflammatory. Indoor flowers with intact terpene profiles (cool dry, cure) deliver the sharpest effects.

What are terpenes?

Organic hydrocarbons produced by almost every plant (citrus peel, pine, lavender, hops). In cannabis they form in the same trichomes as THC and CBD and make up 1–4% of dry weight depending on genetics.

Highly volatile — light monoterpenes like limonene evaporate at room temperature. Old or badly stored flower smells weaker — and often hits flatter too.

The entourage effect

Russo 2011 and Ferber 2020 confirm: full-spectrum extracts work stronger than the same dose of isolated THC or CBD. Terpenes modulate CB1/CB2 binding, influence serotonin and GABA and shift the subjective experience.

Practically: identical THC % in two strains can feel opposite — one active, the other couch-lock. That's terpene work.

The major terpenes

Myrcene (earthy, musky): sedative, muscle-relaxing — typical indica (OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple).

Limonene (citrus): mood-lifting, anxiolytic — Lemon Haze, Wedding Cake.

Reading terpene profiles

Good Swiss producers ship a certificate of analysis (COA) with terpene profile (GC-MS or HPLC). For CannabisClub members the COAs are public per batch.

Nose check: sweet-fruity → limonene/terpinolene. Earthy → myrcene. Floral → linalool. Peppery → caryophyllene. Pine → pinene.

FAQ

Are terpenes psychoactive?

Not in the classic sense — but they noticeably shift THC and CBD effects and have their own physiological actions.

Which terpene relaxes the most?

Myrcene and linalool — the most sedating. High-myrcene indicas are textbook couch-lock.

Why does flower lose its effect?

Terpenes oxidise and evaporate. Storage above 21 °C, light or open jars wreck the profile within weeks.

Do CBD oils contain terpenes?

Only full-spectrum oils. Pure isolates contain none and have no entourage effect.

Where can I find terpene data on strains?

On reputable producer COAs and databases like Leafly or PSI Labs.
