Myrcene — the 'couch-lock' terpene
Myrcene is by far the most abundant terpene in modern cannabis strains and the main driver of the classic heavy indica effect. It also shows up in mango, hops and thyme.
Beta-myrcene is a monoterpene with an earthy, musky aroma. Studies show muscle-relaxant, sedative and mild analgesic effects. Strains over 0.5% myrcene are usually felt as 'indica' — couch-lock, heavy eyes, munchies. Also found in mango, hops, lemongrass and thyme.
What is myrcene?
Myrcene (β-myrcene, C₁₀H₁₆) is a monoterpene with an earthy, musky, slightly fruity profile — anyone who knows hops knows myrcene. It is the dominant terpene in over 40% of analysed cannabis strains worldwide.
Mango, lemongrass, bay leaf and thyme are also myrcene-rich — hence the urban legend that eating a mango before consuming boosts the effect. Not solidly proven clinically, biochemically plausible.
Effects & evidence
Animal and in-vitro studies show three robust effects: muscle relaxation, sedation, mild analgesia. Mechanism: GABA-A modulation and TRPV1 inhibition.
Clinically: high-myrcene strains (>0.5%) are consistently described as heavy, indica, couch-lock. Research is exploring myrcene as an adjunct for sleep disorders.
High-myrcene strains
OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple, Northern Lights, Blue Dream, White Widow — almost all classic indicas land above 0.5%.
On the CBD flower side: myrcene-dominant profiles show up in Kush cuts and CBD versions of OG strains. Best for evening use, relaxation, and pre-sleep.
Safety
GRAS (safe in foods). Liver effects observed at very high isolated doses in rats — not relevant at real consumption levels from flower or oil.
Caution when combined with sedatives (benzodiazepines, opioids): additive effects possible. If in doubt, check with a doctor.
FAQ
What does myrcene taste like?
Earthy, musky, slightly fruity — like ripe mango, hops or damp forest floor.
Is myrcene psychoactive?
No. But it amplifies the sedative side of THC and shifts how heavy a strain feels.
Does myrcene make you sleepy?
Combined with THC or other terpenes, yes — clearly. Pure myrcene in food amounts does not.
Which mango has the most myrcene?
Ripe, sweet varieties (Champagne, Honey). Eat 30–45 minutes before consumption.
How do I spot myrcene-dominant flower?
Check the COA — myrcene value over 0.5%. By nose: earthy, slightly fruity, ripe mango.
