Linalool — the lavender terpene
Linalool is the terpene that gives lavender its scent — and in cannabis strains rich in linalool it delivers strong calm and sleep support. One of the best-studied terpenes around.
Linalool is a monoterpene alcohol with a floral, lavender aroma. Studies show anxiolytic, sedative, analgesic and anticonvulsant effects. High-linalool cannabis strains (Lavender Kush, LA Confidential, Granddaddy Purple) feel deeply calming. Also found in lavender, coriander and basil.
What is linalool?
Linalool (C₁₀H₁₈O) is a monoterpene alcohol with a characteristic lavender profile — floral, fresh, with a woody note. It is the dominant terpene in lavender oil (up to 50%) and in over 200 other plants.
In cannabis it usually appears in smaller amounts (0.1–0.5%) but shapes the experience disproportionately strongly because of its sedative pull.
Effects & evidence
One of the most studied terpenes. Robust evidence for anxiolytic effects (comparable to diazepam in animal studies), sleep support, anticonvulsant properties (so it features in CBD/epilepsy research), and pain relief.
Lavender aromatherapy studies consistently show stress and sleep improvements — the active compound is primarily linalool.
High-linalool strains
Lavender Kush, LA Confidential, Amnesia Haze, Granddaddy Purple, Do-Si-Dos, Zkittlez — all with unusually high linalool.
For CBD users: linalool-dominant cuts are ideal as an evening strain, for stress reduction or restless states.
Use & safety
In full-spectrum CBD oils, linalool amplifies the relaxing effect — great for sleep use cases. Aromatherapy with lavender oil (diffuser, pillow spray) pairs well.
Safety: harmless in food amounts. Very high isolated doses can stress the liver — not relevant at real consumption levels from flower or full-spectrum oil.
FAQ
What does linalool taste like?
Floral, lavender-like, slightly sweet and woody. Light citrus notes at low concentrations.
Does linalool make you sleepy?
Yes — combined with THC or other terpenes, clearly. One of the most sedating terpenes around.
Does linalool help anxiety?
Animal studies show effects comparable to diazepam. Human aromatherapy studies confirm the signal.
Linalool or myrcene — which sedates more?
Both, differently: myrcene is body-heavy (couch-lock), linalool is mentally calming (stress release).
How do I spot linalool-rich flower?
Smell: lavender, floral. COA: linalool > 0.2%.
