CBD in epilepsy treatment – Swiss state of the art
Epidyolex is an authorised CBD medicine for certain epilepsy syndromes, not a general approval of CBD for every form of epilepsy. Swiss indications include defined adjunctive treatments for Lennox–Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex. Eligibility and accompanying medicines differ, and treatment requires specialist care.

What the research actually shows
Swissmedic documents the initial 2021 authorisation and the 2022 extension for tuberous sclerosis complex. Current prescribing information remains decisive. Whether clobazam or another medicine belongs in the accompanying treatment must be assessed individually; this page does not claim a universal clobazam requirement. Authorisation and individual treatment response are separate questions.
What this means for treatment
Decisions depend on the exact diagnosis, previous seizure treatments and accompanying medicines. A seizure diary can help make changes easier to assess. Agree with the team which seizure types and everyday consequences will be monitored. A standardised medicine cannot be equated with a retail CBD oil.
Risks and questions for your appointment
Prescribing information includes liver risks and interactions, particularly with certain antiseizure medicines. Monitoring must fit the preparation and accompanying treatment. This article provides no dosing schedule for children or adults. Do not independently replace antiseizure treatment with CBD; follow the individual emergency plan for acute seizures.
Swiss rules and reimbursement: separate assessments
Since August 2022, medical prescribing of cannabis medicines no longer requires an exceptional FOPH permit. This does not establish authorisation for every condition or automatic reimbursement. The preparation, indication and applicable reimbursement rules need separate assessment.
Diagnostic records, previous treatment attempts and an up-to-date medication list are more useful for an appointment than a preferred product name. Record the everyday difficulties you hope to improve, remaining uncertainties and who will monitor outcomes and tolerability. Club membership does not replace medical assessment.
FAQ
Can retail CBD oil replace Epidyolex?
No. Strength, authorised use, quality control and medical supervision are not equivalent. Any change to epilepsy treatment must be discussed with the responsible clinical team.
Does a prescription guarantee reimbursement?
No. Prescribing, medicine authorisation and reimbursement are separate questions. Clarify which rules apply to the preparation and indication, including whether prior reimbursement approval is needed.
