ADHD and cannabis: self-medication, not therapy
Cannabis is not an established treatment for core ADHD symptoms. The small randomised trial by Cooper and colleagues did not significantly improve its primary outcome. Some additional findings are insufficient for a general treatment recommendation. Feeling relaxed and reliably improving attention or everyday functioning are different outcomes.

What the research actually shows
The pilot trial studied 30 adults receiving one particular medicine. Its findings cannot be generalised to every cannabis product or to children. After accounting for multiple statistical comparisons, the findings were not strong enough to establish efficacy. Personal accounts can generate research questions but cannot replace controlled trials.
What this means for treatment
Discuss actual cannabis use openly during an ADHD assessment: frequency, reasons and symptom changes help interpretation. Diagnosis does not rest solely on an attention test or response to a substance. Ask about established care and define goals for work, education, relationships or day-to-day organisation.
Risks and questions for your appointment
Describe both intended and unwanted effects. Use alongside ADHD medicines or other substances needs clinical assessment. Do not independently stop an existing treatment. This page does not impose a universal abstinence interval before testing; the assessing professional should determine appropriate conditions.
Swiss rules and reimbursement: separate assessments
Since August 2022, medical prescribing of cannabis medicines no longer requires an exceptional FOPH permit. This does not establish authorisation for every condition or automatic reimbursement. The preparation, indication and applicable reimbursement rules need separate assessment.
Diagnostic records, previous treatment attempts and an up-to-date medication list are more useful for an appointment than a preferred product name. Record the everyday difficulties you hope to improve, remaining uncertainties and who will monitor outcomes and tolerability. Club membership does not replace medical assessment.
FAQ
Does feeling calmer prove cannabis treats ADHD?
No. Relaxation can feel helpful without reliably improving attention, impulse control or everyday functioning. Treatment goals and adverse effects should be assessed separately.
Does a prescription guarantee reimbursement?
No. Prescribing, medicine authorisation and reimbursement are separate questions. Clarify which rules apply to the preparation and indication, including whether prior reimbursement approval is needed.
