Sanitas and medical cannabis — 2026 coverage

Sanitas holds around 9 % of the Swiss market. When does it reimburse cannabinoids and how do you file a request?

Sanitas covers Sativex® for MS spasticity via mandatory insurance. Other cannabinoids need an individual cost-approval (10–20 days). Sanitas has opened up. Palliative approvals are straightforward; chronic pain needs a second specialist opinion.

Default coverage

Under mandatory insurance (LAMal/KVG), Sanitas pays cannabinoids on the Specialities List — currently only Sativex® for moderate-to-severe MS spasticity.

Dronabinol, standardised THC flower and magistral preparations sit outside and require an individual decision.

Cost-approval process

Article 71a/71b LAMal form filled by your doctor, reviewed by the Sanitas trusted physician.

Sanitas has opened up. Palliative approvals are straightforward; chronic pain needs a second specialist opinion. Allow 10–20 business days.

Cannabis Social Club alternative

If declined and for recreational use, the CSC offers a legal and much cheaper path.
