CBD Flower: Indoor vs. Outdoor vs. Greenhouse

Indoor — Premium, but energy-hungry

Indoor cultivation takes place in closed rooms with HPS or LED lighting, regulated CO₂ supply, and precise temperature and humidity control. Plants receive 12–18 hours of light during the vegetative phase, then switch to a 12/12 cycle for flowering.

Pros: 4–6 harvests per year, dense resinous buds, intense terpenes, consistent quality. Cons: 3,000–6,000 kWh of electricity per kg of dried flower, high fixed costs.

Typical Swiss indoor: compact, intensely coloured buds (purple hues from cold nights), 12–18% CBD, and strong aromas (Kush, Cookies, Zkittlez).

Outdoor — Sustainable and underrated

Plants grow outdoors under the sun, usually from May to September. There is one harvest per year, in October.

Pros: practically zero energy costs, minimal CO₂ footprint, large plants (up to 3 m), low price. Cons: weather-dependent, less dense buds, risk of mould during wet autumn weeks.

Outdoor CBD often has a 'greener' terpene profile (more pinene, myrcene), and the effect is relaxed and earthy. Well-suited for oil extraction and vaporizer use.

Greenhouse — The middle ground

Sunlight plus climate control: glass or foil greenhouses equipped with blackout systems for light management. 2–3 harvests per year are possible.

Pros: 80% less energy than indoor, better appearance than outdoor, controlled environment. Cons: higher fixed costs than outdoor, less dense than indoor.

In Switzerland, greenhouse is the standard commercial route for many producers to cultivate consistent, medium-to-high-quality CBD flowers.

Practical recommendation

For pure smoking/vaping with a focus on appearance and aroma: Indoor.

For oil production, a daily wellness dose, and environmental consciousness: Outdoor.

For a good price-performance ratio with decent appearance: Greenhouse.
