THCV — cannabinoid profile
THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a cannabinoid that occurs naturally in cannabis or is derived from its precursors. Molecular formula C₁₉H₂₆O₂, molar mass 286.4 g/mol. Among the 100+ identified cannabinoids, THCV belongs to the mildly psychoactive group. This page consolidates current knowledge on chemistry, occurrence in cannabis, receptor action and Swiss legal status — for information only.

Chemistry
Chemically, THCV is a terpenophenol (meroterpenoid). THCV arises from the CBGVA precursor (divarinic pathway) via THCVA synthase and decarboxylation. Boiling point ~220 °C. It is lipophilic, sensitive to heat and light, and slowly oxidises in air. Analytically it is quantified by HPLC (acid form) and GC-MS (neutral form after decarboxylation) and appears on every modern Swiss batch COA.
Occurrence in cannabis
In cannabis, THCV is produced in the trichomes of the female flower. Typical concentrations: meist < 1 %, in afrikanischen Landrassen bis 5 %. Content depends on genetics, light spectrum, harvest timing and storage. Specific strains are linked dynamically below from our strain database.
Swiss legal status
THCV is not explicitly listed under the Swiss Narcotics Act but is watched by Swissmedic due to its structural similarity to THC. Swiss legal note: cannabis with ≥ 1 % THC is a narcotic under the Narcotics Act. CBD products below 1 % THC are legal. Effect descriptions are informational and are not therapeutic claims.
