Chemistry

Chemically, THC-O is a terpenophenol (meroterpenoid). THC-O is not biosynthesised. It is produced from CBD via Δ8-THC followed by acetylation with acetic anhydride — a process with impurity risk. Boiling point ~180 °C. It is lipophilic, sensitive to heat and light, and slowly oxidises in air. Analytically it is quantified by HPLC (acid form) and GC-MS (neutral form after decarboxylation) and appears on every modern Swiss batch COA.

Occurrence in cannabis

In cannabis, THC-O is produced in the trichomes of the female flower. Typical concentrations: kommt in der Pflanze nicht vor; ausschliesslich semi-synthetisch aus CBD oder THC hergestellt.
