THC — cannabinoid profile
THC (Delta-9-THC, Dronabinol, Δ9-THC) is a cannabinoid that occurs naturally in cannabis or is derived from its precursors. Molecular formula C₂₁H₃₀O₂, molar mass 314.5 g/mol. Among the 100+ identified cannabinoids, THC belongs to the psychoactive group. This page consolidates current knowledge on chemistry, occurrence in cannabis, receptor action and Swiss legal status — for information only.

Chemistry
Chemically, THC is a terpenophenol (meroterpenoid). THC arises from enzymatic conversion of CBGA to THCA (acid form), which becomes active THC via heat-driven decarboxylation. Boiling point ~157 °C. It is lipophilic, sensitive to heat and light, and slowly oxidises in air. Analytically it is quantified by HPLC (acid form) and GC-MS (neutral form after decarboxylation) and appears on every modern Swiss batch COA.
Occurrence in cannabis
In cannabis, THC is produced in the trichomes of the female flower. Typical concentrations: 15–28 % (moderne Hybriden), 0.5–1 % (Nutzhanf). Content depends on genetics, light spectrum, harvest timing and storage. Specific strains are linked dynamically below from our strain database.
Swiss legal status
In Switzerland, THC ≥ 1 % in the final product is a narcotic under the Narcotics Act. Trade and possession without authorisation are punishable; medical cannabis has been prescription-available since 2022. Swiss legal note: cannabis with ≥ 1 % THC is a narcotic under the Narcotics Act. CBD products below 1 % THC are legal. Effect descriptions are informational and are not therapeutic claims.
