Chemistry

Chemically, CBL is a terpenophenol (meroterpenoid). CBL forms non-enzymatically through photochemical cyclisation of CBC under UV light during storage. Boiling point ~220 °C. It is lipophilic, sensitive to heat and light, and slowly oxidises in air. Analytically it is quantified by HPLC (acid form) and GC-MS (neutral form after decarboxylation) and appears on every modern Swiss batch COA.

Occurrence in cannabis

In cannabis, CBL is produced in the trichomes of the female flower. Typical concentrations: in gelagertem oder lichtexponiertem Cannabis in Spuren (< 0.1 %); in ausgehärtetem Haschisch etwas höher. Swiss legal status
