Chemistry

Chemically, 11-OH-THC is a terpenophenol (meroterpenoid). 11-OH-THC is formed in the human body from Δ9-THC. Oral THC (edibles, tinctures) undergoes strong first-pass metabolism and is converted to 11-OH-THC far more than inhaled THC. Boiling point ~195 °C. It is lipophilic, sensitive to heat and light, and slowly oxidises in air. Analytically it is quantified by HPLC (acid form) and GC-MS (neutral form after decarboxylation) and appears on every modern Swiss batch COA.

Occurrence in cannabis

In cannabis, 11-OH-THC is produced in the trichomes of the female flower. Typical concentrations: kommt in der Pflanze nicht vor; entsteht endogen bei oraler THC-Aufnahme.
