What is the difference between CBD and THC?
CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are both cannabinoids from hemp but act very differently: THC is psychoactive and causes a high, CBD is non-intoxicating and offers anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects. In Switzerland, THC over 1 % is illegal, CBD under 1 % THC is freely available.
Key facts
- THC: psychoactive
- CBD: non-psychoactive
- Both act via the endocannabinoid system
- Switzerland: CBD < 1 % THC legal
- Medical: CBD for epilepsy, THC for spasticity
Detailed answer
Both molecules act on the endocannabinoid system but in different ways. THC binds directly to the brain's CB1 receptor, producing euphoria, relaxation or, at high doses, anxiety. CBD acts indirectly by modulating endocannabinoids and via serotonin/vanilloid receptors. Clinically proven: CBD reduces certain epileptic seizures (Epidyolex, Sativex). THC is used medically for spasticity (MS), nausea (chemo) and anorexia (HIV/cancer). Legally: CBD < 1 % THC is freely available in Switzerland; THC only on prescription or via pilot projects.
