Market volume & segments
The Swiss cannabis market generated approximately CHF 850M in retail revenue in 2026, split across four segments: legal CBD (~CHF 300M), medical cannabis (~CHF 45M), pilot-project sales (~CHF 12M), informal/black market (~CHF 500M, estimated from Addiction Switzerland consumption figures and price sampling).
The CBD segment continues to grow but is consolidating — pure resellers are declining while certified organic producers gain share. The vape category grows disproportionately (+25% p.a.).
- CBD retail — CHF 300M (2026) — 55% flower, 25% oil, 10% vape, 10% hash/extracts.
- Medical — CHF 45M — 6,500+ prescription patients, +30% p.a.
- Pilot projects — CHF 12M — 5 cities, 4,000+ cumulative participants.
- Informal — CHF 450–550M — estimated, price spread vs regulated market ~60%.
Consumption & demand
Around 30% of 18–64 year-olds have consumed cannabis at least once (lifetime); ~220,000 are 30-day active consumers (Addiction Switzerland monitoring). For CBD products the user base including wellness/cosmetics is estimated at 500,000–700,000 adults.
Median consumption of active users is 5–8 grams per month. Demand for certified, lab-tested quality is rising: 68% of respondents in a 2025 Addiction Switzerland survey named 'purity/safety' as the main reason for switching away from the black market.
Pilot projects — interim status
Five cities run active FOPH pilot trials: Basel, Zurich, Bern, Lausanne, Geneva (more in preparation). More than 4,000 cumulative participants. Key interim findings: no significant increase in problem consumption, high acceptance of structured points of sale, sharply reduced black-market purchases among participants.
These results provide the empirical basis for a possible federal legal framework in 2027–2028.
Price evolution 2024–2026
Price per gram in the regulated channel (pilot/pharmacy) is CHF 8–12 (standard) resp. CHF 11–15 (premium) in 2026. Black market price sits at CHF 10–14 (standard) resp. CHF 13–18 (premium). Cannabis Social Clubs reach, as a collective purchase, CHF 3–5 per gram for members — the only channel with structurally lower prices.
CBD prices per gram have fallen 12% since 2024 (overproduction, consolidation).
2027 outlook
Base case: legal share of the total market rises from ~40% today to 55–60% by end of 2027, driven by (a) pilot-project expansion, (b) broader medical prescription practice, (c) CBD retail consolidation, (d) growing acceptance of cannabis collectives as a third path alongside pharmacy and pilot.
Risks: cantonal political rollbacks, EU regulatory pressure on Swiss CBD exports, vape safety debate.
