Harvesting, Drying & Curing — The Steps That Create Aroma
A grower can do everything right — but poor drying and a lack of curing will destroy 40% of the final quality.
TL;DR: Harvest readiness: trichomes 60–80% milky, 10–20% amber. Drying: 10–14 days at 18–20 °C / 55–62% RH, in the dark. Curing: 4–8 weeks in glass jars with daily burping.
Harvest Time — Reading the Trichomes
Trichomes go through three stages: clear (immature), milky (peak THC), and amber (THC → CBN, more sedative).
Peak potency: 80% milky, 10–20% amber. Sedative effect: more amber (30–40%).
Tool: 60× loupe or USB microscope.
Drying — The 10–14 Day Rule
18–20 °C / 55–62% RH, dark, gentle air movement. Hang whole branches.
Too fast → "hay aroma", bound chlorophyll, harsh smoke.
Ready when small stems snap instead of bending.
Curing — The Alchemy
Place buds in glass jars (75% full). First 2 weeks: burp 2–3 times daily. From week 4: twice a week.
Boveda packs (62%) automate humidity management.
Smokable after 4 weeks, significantly smoother after 8 weeks.
FAQ
Can I cut drying short?
Yes, but quality will suffer. Freeze-drying is the professional standard for rosin production.
What happens chemically during curing?
Chlorophyll and sugars are broken down by aerobic bacteria, terpenes reorganise, and THCA slowly decarboxylates.
