Can Tourists Smoke Weed in Zurich?
Zurich is one of six Swiss cities running a regulated cannabis pilot — but it is residents-only. Here is exactly what a tourist can and cannot do in 2026.
Tourists in Zurich can legally buy and smoke CBD cannabis (under 1% THC) — sold in shops and online. THC cannabis is illegal recreationally; the Zurich pilot programme is residents-only and you cannot register as a tourist. Carrying under 10 grams of THC means a CHF 100 fine if caught, no criminal record.
What you can legally do as a tourist
Buy and consume CBD cannabis. Zurich is full of CBD shops, dispensaries and online stores selling legal cannabis flowers, hash and pre-rolls with under 1% THC. The product looks, smells and burns like classic cannabis — just without the strong psychoactive effect of THC. No ID is required beyond age verification (18+).
Smoke CBD outdoors where smoking is generally permitted — parks, designated areas, your hotel balcony if the hotel allows it. The same rules as tobacco apply: no smoking in restaurants, trains, train stations, most bars or indoor public spaces.
Order CBD online for delivery to your hotel. CannabisClub.ch ships discreetly via Swiss Post in 1–2 working days, no questions asked, neutral packaging.
What you cannot do
Buy THC cannabis legally. The Zurich pilot programme ("Züri Can") sells regulated THC products only to residents of the city of Zurich who registered before the trial. As a tourist, you cannot join — not for a day, not for a week, not at all.
Smoke a joint in public spaces without risk. If a THC joint is identified by police, you will be fined CHF 100 (adults, up to 10 g) or face criminal proceedings (over 10 g). No criminal record for the small fine, but the cannabis is confiscated and you spend an unpleasant 20 minutes with the Stadtpolizei.
Bring cannabis into or out of Switzerland. Customs treats it as narcotics trafficking even if it is legal at home.
The Zurich pilot programme — why it does not help tourists
"Züri Can" launched in 2023 as the largest Swiss cannabis pilot. Around 2,000 registered Zurich residents can buy controlled THC products at licensed pharmacies, dispensaries and social clubs. The programme is monitored scientifically and runs through to 2030.
Strict residency requirements were a condition of federal approval. Registration is closed to visitors, students from other cantons, second-home owners and anyone who cannot prove a primary Zurich address. There is no "tourist scheme" anywhere in Switzerland.
Smart traveller advice
If you want the cannabis experience legally, go for premium CBD. Modern Swiss indoor CBD genetics (Indoor Glue, Lemon Haze CBD, Strawberry CBD) are visually and aromatically identical to THC flowers. The high is relaxed and clear rather than psychoactive — many travellers actually prefer it.
Do not drive after consuming any cannabis, CBD included. CBD itself is not illegal to drive on, but Swiss roadside tests detect trace THC and any positive result means licence suspension.
Stay away from offers on the street. Quality is poor, prices are inflated, and being caught with street weed costs CHF 100 instantly even when the seller walks away.
Cannabis clubs and where they fit in
CannabisClub.ch is a Swiss members club focused on legal CBD-compliant cannabis. Anyone in Switzerland — residents and visitors with a Swiss delivery address (hotel works) — can join and order at member prices, with neutral packaging delivered by Swiss Post.
The model is built to scale into THC the moment regulated sales become legal nationwide. For now, it is the cleanest way for travellers to access lab-tested, properly grown Swiss cannabis without dealing with the street.
Can tourists buy weed in Zurich?
CBD cannabis (under 1% THC), yes — legally and openly. THC cannabis, no. The Zurich Züri Can pilot is residents-only and tourists cannot register.
Is smoking weed in public legal in Zurich?
Smoking legal CBD outdoors is fine where tobacco smoking is allowed. Smoking THC cannabis in public is illegal and police can fine you CHF 100 on the spot.
Where can I buy CBD in Zurich?
Specialised CBD shops in the city centre, many tobacco shops, and online via CannabisClub.ch with hotel delivery in 1–2 working days.
What happens if I am caught with weed as a tourist?
Up to 10 grams of THC: CHF 100 fine, cannabis confiscated, no record. Over 10 grams: criminal investigation. Buying or dealing carries serious penalties.
Can I bring cannabis back to my country from Switzerland?
No. Crossing the Swiss border with cannabis in either direction is a customs and narcotics offence, even with CBD and even into countries where cannabis is legal.
